Not unlike the rest of you, I spent a little time soul-searching as I approached the new year. It’s been a long while since I’ve made resolutions. However, I make frequent attempts towards self-improvement. In fact, I’m a self-improvement enthusiast. I have a couple of “self-help” authors whom I follow. I read the same books several times, highlighting the parts that move me or encourage me or motivate me to see things differently. The more I look at things from a new perspective, the more I realize that self-improvement is really all about self-acceptance.
Magazines and “as-seen-on-TV-infomercials” would have us believe that we are not yet good enough. We must order (NOW) their latest gadget or gimmick, use it for a full 30 days and then we’ll magically be thin enough, strong enough, young enough, clear-skinned enough… You all know as well as I do that when we follow this crazy-making logic, we never measure up.
My intention for 2013 is simple. Be Enough, As Is.
Does that mean I won’t exercise or follow my Whole9 eating plan? Absolutely not. Those are nonnegotiables which actually nurture me, giving me the foundation I desire to live joyfully. Am I giving up self-improvement? Nope. I’ll be reading and teaching and sharing the lessons that excite me and nudge me to experience life with my whole heart.
The difference, as I see it, is the outcome desired. Do I exercise, eat right, pray, give thanks, and share daily practices of joy hoping that one day I will be enough? Or do I do those very same things because I. Am. Enough. As. Is.
This is the lesson of grace. God gives because He is God. Not because I’ve pleased him by doing enough or giving enough or giving up enough. God’s grace is an undeserved, miraculous gift that says to us, “We are enough. As is.”
Peace, Love and Happy New Year!
